Helping Others Create Opportunities for Connection, Community and Celebration

Perspective

I have often heard it said that if you don’t like your view, change your seat. In my daily living this often holds true when sitting in a different chair in the living room and seeing the room from a different vantage point.

I am most comfortable when in nature listening to the sounds of the birds, rustling of the trees, owls chatting on a late evening and feeling the breeze as it gently reminds me to be in the moment. Being in the moment and present at that second is not as easy as it once was. To-do lists and responsibilities often have me thinking of the future whether immediate or distant.

Nature can provide us with opportunities to see things differently as we move and observe. The houses in my immediate surroundings are flanked by trees of different ages and species.

As I view the stand of trees from the street, nothing in particular stands out to me. However, as I move across the yard the view begins to change for one particular branch.

I am drawn to the shape and the curve as well as the end which resembles a fork.

Changing perspectives often requires us to make a conscious decision to pause and contemplate what is before us.

Focus.
Questioning.
Repositioning.

All are needed to assess the situation, whether it be the tree in front of us or a life changing decision, planned or unplanned.

Continuing to move my “seat” in the yard, thus changing my view, the branches begin to resemble a distinctive shape to me.

Canopy of trees with branches that form a heart.
The curves form what appears to me is a heart.

A heart. Yes! I see it clearly from this new vantage point. Some may view it as broken given the disconnection of the branch. Whereas I see it as a welcoming invitation. An opportunity. Open not closed.

So I ask you..

What is your current perspective on the things around you?

Are there decisions that need your focus, be they small or life changing?

Is it time to move your seat, feet or view?

Is your heart closed or open?

I encourage you to take time to get outside. Take a stroll. Look up and around. It just might be the change in scenery you need to bring things into focus and provide a different perspective.

Peace.
